Brisbane Broncos Push to Seal Mega $2 Million Contract for Kalyn Ponga as Knights Already Welcome His Replacement

The Brisbane Broncos are preparing to make one of the boldest recruitment moves in recent NRL history, with reports emerging that the club is on the verge of finalising a $2 million contract for Newcastle Knights skipper Kalyn Ponga.

Ponga, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying players in the competition, has long been at the centre of speculation about his future.

Now, the Broncos appear ready to table a multi-year deal worth around $2 million, in a bid to lure the Queensland Origin star back north and add even more firepower to their backline.

The timing of the move comes as the Knights have already locked in Ponga’s potential successor, easing concerns about a leadership vacuum should their captain depart. Newcastle recently confirmed the signing of a highly rated replacement, signalling that the club is planning for life after Ponga.

For Brisbane, the chase is all about securing a marquee figure who can transform their attack and lift them into genuine premiership contention. With veteran halves Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt mentoring the squad and a strong forward pack already in place, the addition of Ponga would provide the Broncos with the x-factor they’ve been missing.

Club insiders suggest that Ponga’s close ties to Queensland and his history with the Maroons jersey have played a major role in Brisbane’s confidence of landing the deal. While nothing has been formally announced, negotiations are said to be at an advanced stage.

If the move is confirmed, it would mark one of the biggest player transfers of the decade and could reshape the balance of power in the NRL. For the Knights, it represents the end of an era losing their captain and playmaker but also a fresh start with a new signing already in place to step into the role.

A decision is expected in the coming weeks, with both clubs bracing for an outcome that could send shockwaves through the competition.
