The Brisbane Broncos have officially secured the signature of veteran playmaker Ben Hunt, marking a major recruitment move ahead of the 2026 NRL season. The 34-year-old is set to return to the club where his professional career began, signing a two-year contract that will see him bring leadership, experience, and playmaking quality back to Red Hill.
A Homecoming for Hunt
Ben Hunt, who previously captained the St George Illawarra Dragons, expressed enthusiasm about returning to the Broncos — the club where he debuted in 2009 and played over 180 games before departing in 2017.
“I’ve always had a strong connection to Brisbane,” Hunt said. “It feels like coming home, and I’m excited about what this team is building.”
Why the Broncos Made the Move
The Broncos are expected to benefit greatly from Hunt’s experience and versatility. With the team stacked with young talent like Ezra Mam and Reece Walsh, the addition of a seasoned leader like Hunt is seen as a stabilising force — particularly in pressure moments and finals footy.
Broncos coach Kevin Walters welcomed the signing, saying, “Ben brings professionalism and calm to the halves. He knows what it takes to lead a team deep into the season.”
What’s Next?
Hunt will join pre-season training with the Broncos in late 2025 and is expected to play a key mentoring role while competing for a starting spot in the halves or at hooker.
This move signals the Broncos’ intent to mix youth with proven experience as they chase another run at the NRL Premiership.
