Reece Walsh backs Payne Haas’s clothing brand ahead of Broncos’ preliminary final

Broncos superstar Reece Walsh has publicly thrown his support behind teammate Payne Haas’s controversial clothing label, just days out from Brisbane’s blockbuster preliminary final against reigning premiers Penrith.

Standing by his mate

Haas’s off-field venture has sparked mixed reactions in recent weeks, with critics questioning the timing and image of the brand as the Broncos chase their first premiership since 2006. But Walsh said the criticism has been overblown and insisted the squad remains fully focused on football.

“Payno’s been working hard on and off the field, and I’ve got his back,” Walsh said. “People can say what they want, but he’s still training the house down and putting the team first. At the end of the day, that’s what matters most.”

Distraction or drive?

While some commentators suggested Haas’s brand launch risked becoming a distraction during finals, Walsh dismissed that idea outright. The star fullback stressed that the playing group remains united, with Haas’s leadership and consistency still a driving force in the Broncos’ engine room.

“Nothing has changed in how he prepares or how he plays,” Walsh added. “We know how important he is to our side, and we’re all behind him heading into this weekend.”

Eyes on Penrith

Brisbane now faces the toughest of tests against the Panthers, who are chasing a fourth straight grand final appearance. The Broncos fell agonisingly short against Penrith in last year’s decider, and Haas’s clash with the Panthers’ powerhouse pack looms as one of the key battles.

Coach Kevin Walters also downplayed concerns over outside noise, insisting the squad has handled the week with maturity. “We’re locked in,” Walters said. “Payne’s in great shape, the boys are confident, and we know what’s at stake.”

Bigger picture

For Haas, the brand is part of his growing off-field profile, but within the Broncos camp, teammates like Walsh see it as just another part of modern rugby league life. As Walsh put it: “We’re here to play footy, but we’re also people. Payno’s brand is something he’s proud of, and as teammates we support him 100 per cent.”

With kick-off looming, Brisbane fans will be hoping Haas lets his footy do the talking—while Walsh’s show of loyalty underlines the bond in a Broncos side determined to make history.
