Astros Target Cedric Mullins in Trade Talks as Left-Handed Bat Remains Top Priority

With the MLB trade deadline less than a month away, the Houston Astros are in active discussions to acquire Cedric Mullins, the Baltimore Orioles’ switch-hitting outfielder, as a short-term fix for their left-handed lineup gap.

Sources close to the situation confirm that the Astros have expressed interest in Mullins, who is under a one-year, $8.7 million contract this season and will become a free agent this winter. Mullins’ affordability and rental status align with Houston’s current financial flexibility, as the club edges toward the competitive balance tax threshold.

The 29-year-old has had a streaky season at the plate, slashing .213/.295/.413 with 13 home runs and 15 stolen bases, but his speed, defensive range in center field, and power from the left side offer the kind of upside Houston badly needs. The Astros currently rank dead last in MLB in left-handed plate appearances and have struggled to balance a righty-heavy lineup in the absence of Yordan Alvarez, who remains sidelined.

Astros GM Dana Brown has made no secret about the team’s intentions.

> “We’re exploring left-handed bats that can bring a little more athleticism and balance,” Brown said Sunday. “It’s a real area of need, and we’re motivated to make something happen.”

Mullins is viewed as a cost-effective target compared to other lefty hitters rumored to be available, such as Ryan O’Hearn, Brandon Lowe, or Jarren Duran, all of whom have longer contracts or higher acquisition costs.

However, Houston’s limited farm system could complicate any negotiations. The Orioles are reportedly seeking controllable pitching in return — a price that might be steep for a two-month rental, even one with postseason experience and a 30-30 season on his résumé (2021).

Still, with the July 31 deadline fast approaching and Houston hovering near playoff contention, pressure is mounting for the front office to act.
