In a crushing development for Red Sox Nation, All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL in last night’s game against the New York Yankees.
The injury occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning when Devers attempted to beat out a grounder to first base. As he lunged for the bag, his left knee buckled awkwardly, and he immediately collapsed in pain. Fenway Park fell silent as medical staff rushed to his aid and carted him off the field.
An MRI conducted early this morning confirmed the worst: a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, requiring surgery and an estimated recovery time of 8 to 10 months.
“This is a heartbreaker,” manager Alex Cora told reporters. “Raffy is not just the backbone of our offense—he’s the soul of this clubhouse. Losing him like this…it hurts. But we’ve got to rally and keep fighting.”
Devers, 28, was having one of the best seasons of his career, batting .312 with 21 home runs and 63 RBIs. He was widely considered a frontrunner for the AL MVP and a key reason Boston remained in contention in the ultra-competitive AL East.
The Red Sox, now facing a serious hole in the middle of their lineup, are expected to call up top prospect Marcelo Mayer or shift Justin Turner back to the hot corner while exploring trade options ahead of the deadline.
