BREAKING: Top-ranked South Carolina high school recruit commits to UConn over USC Trojans

Agot Makeer, the No. 4 women’s basketball recruit in the ESPN class of 2025, committed to South Carolina on Saturday, she announced, choosing the Gamecocks over UConn and Michigan State.

The 6-foot-1 wing from Canada is an impactful late-period signee for coach Dawn Staley and the South Carolina program, which also signed the No. 22 player, wing/forward Ayla McDowell, during the early signing period in November. Makeer’s commitment boosts the Gamecocks into ESPN’s top 25 recruiting class rankings.

“I know my goals and who I want to be in the future, and I personally feel like South Carolina will get me there,” Makeer said of her decision. “The conversations and interactions I’ve had with Coach Staley and the coaching staff have been genuine from the very beginning. … Usually on visits and during calls, head coaches will stay out of most of it. Coach Dawn attended every single part of my official visit and was in the lead of a lot of my recruitment.

“I expect a competitive environment in every aspect of my life. I’m going to a school that is a front-runner to win back-to-back national championships. Everything I get will be earned, and I am excited to test who I am. I don’t expect it to be easy, but I do expect that I will be challenged in a positive learning environment.”

Makeer made a jump in her ranking and recruitment after a strong junior season at Crestwood Prep in Canada before being part of the silver medal Canadian team at the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup, where she averaged 17.7 points, 7 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

She transferred to Montverde Academy (Florida) for her senior high school season in the fall, and although she has missed significant time with injury, she has averaged 10 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists for the program. The team is optimistic she will play in the postseason tournament.

Makeer has a blend of length and versatility on the perimeter with a complementary shooting touch. She has lead guard experience with the ability to score in bunches.

“Agot is an eager learner,” Montverde coach Matt Shewmake told ESPN. “Her curiosity about the game and willingness to be coachable shows up in her incredibly IQ and instinctual play. Couple that with her length and athletic gifts and it makes her one of the most dynamic players in our game.”
