$6.5 million for four years: Parramatta Eels have confirmed that 30-year-old forward has been granted an immediate release to join Warrington Wolves…

The Parramatta Eels have confirmed that 30-year-old forward Ryan Matterson has been granted an immediate release to join Warrington Wolves in the English Super League on loan for the remainder of the season.

This move comes after limited playing opportunities for Matterson in the 2025 NRL campaign.

🔄 Why Parramatta let him go

  • Under new coach Jason Ryles, Parramatta initiated a roster shake-up that saw several experienced players, including Matterson, lose their regular spots. He featured just four times off the bench this season.
  • The Eels are prioritizing younger talents—Kitione Kautoga, Charlie Guymer, and Jordan Samrani—who have stepped up impressively. Veteran forwards Dylan Walker and Jack de Belin are expected to form the middle pack in 2026.

✈️ The Super League opportunity

  • Matterson will link up with Warrington Wolves, coached by Sam Burgess, for the rest of the season.
  • While contracted to Parramatta through 2026, this loan offers a golden chance to rekindle his career, gain international experience, and potentially return to the NRL with renewed form.
  • His rugby league pedigree—his father, Terry Matterson, played for London Broncos and coached Castleford Tigers—adds a rich Super League connection to this move.

🗣️ What Parramatta had to say

Eels’ General Manager of Football, Mark O’Neill, stated:

“This is an opportunity for Ryan to explore new challenges and broaden his professional experience in the English Super League.”

He also wished Matterson well during his stint at Warrington and emphasized that the club remains open to his potential return in 2026.

🏉 Career snapshot & outlook

  • Began NRL career at Sydney Roosters (2016–18), won a minor premiership in 2018.
  • Short stint at Wests Tigers (2019), before signing with Parramatta later that year.
  • Played nearly 100 games for the Eels, including being part of the 2022 Grand Final squad
  • Despite his NRL pedigree, he’s seen as a versatile forward—able to play edge and middle—that hasn’t found consistency this season.

At Warrington, Matterson will vie for a regular starting role. A strong performance in the Super League could reignite his NRL career or pave the way for further international opportunities. For Parramatta, this move will free up space for emerging talent while keeping veteran experience within striking distance.

📝 Final Thoughts

Ryan Matterson’s loan to Warrington aligns with Parramatta’s strategy to rejuvenate their squad while offering a seasoned player the chance to reset in a new environment. His Super League journey could be the spark he needs to bounce back—or open doors to new horizons. Whether it’s a return to the NRL or a permanent Super League shift, all eyes will be on his performances in England.
