3 reasons why Indiana Fever should prioritize Lexie Hull over Sophie Cunningham in free agency

Why the Indiana Fever Should Prioritize Lexie Hull Over Sophie Cunningham in Free Agency

The Indiana Fever are entering one of the most important offseasons in franchise history. With a young core led by Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and NaLyssa Smith, the Fever must decide which role players best complement their stars. One decision looms particularly large: whether to prioritize re-signing Lexie Hull or to pursue Sophie Cunningham in free agency.

While both players bring energy and toughness, the Fever’s trajectory and team identity point clearly toward keeping Hull as a long-term piece.

1. Lexie Hull’s Defensive Value Is Irreplaceable

Lexie Hull’s impact doesn’t always show up on the scoreboard, but it’s everywhere else — deflections, steals, drawn charges, and relentless pressure on opposing guards. Over the past two seasons, Hull has grown into one of the WNBA’s most reliable perimeter defenders.

Her 2025 season was her best yet, setting career highs in nearly every category while guarding some of the league’s toughest assignments. For a Fever squad that struggled on the defensive end early in the year, Hull’s hustle and instincts became a cornerstone of their playoff push.

In a league where defense often decides playoff series, Hull’s value extends far beyond the box score. She’s the kind of player every contender needs — one who embraces the dirty work and makes life easier for her teammates.

2. Youth, Development, and Long-Term Fit

At just 25, Hull is still ascending. Drafted sixth overall in 2022, she’s developed steadily under coach Stephanie White’s system. Her chemistry with the Fever’s young stars is evident — she moves well without the ball, spaces the floor for Clark’s drives, and makes smart, selfless plays.

Cunningham, while a proven veteran with shooting and toughness, comes with question marks. A season-ending MCL injury in 2025 casts doubt on her immediate availability, and at 29, her best developmental years may be behind her.

Hull, by contrast, offers growth potential and continuity — two things vital for a young team building toward sustained success.

3. Team Identity and Culture Alignment

The Fever have been rebuilding not just a roster, but a culture — one centered on accountability, energy, and team-first mentality. Hull embodies those principles. Her relentless hustle has made her a fan favorite and a locker-room tone-setter.

Coach White has praised Hull’s approach repeatedly, calling her “a culture driver” and “the kind of player who raises everyone’s standards.” In contrast, Cunningham, while competitive and vocal, may not perfectly align with the Fever’s emphasis on defense and development over short-term flash.

Re-signing Hull sends a message that Indiana values effort, growth, and chemistry — the cornerstones of championship DNA.

Final Take

Lexie Hull may never be a 20-point scorer, but her presence gives Indiana something just as valuable: stability, toughness, and defensive identity. With her age, upside, and proven fit alongside Clark and Boston, she represents a smarter, longer-term investment than Sophie Cunningham.

In a league built on stars but won by systems, the Fever should prioritize the player who makes their stars shine brighter — and that player is Lexie Hull.
