🏉 Blockbuster 2025 Trade Period: The 10 Biggest Parramatta Eels Moves of the 21st Century

As the 2025 NRL trade period explodes into life, few clubs have been more active or more unpredictable than the Parramatta Eels.

Known for their history of bold recruitment decisions and dramatic roster shake-ups, the Eels have never shied away from rolling the dice on big-name stars or breakout talent.

From iconic signings that shaped premiership runs to controversial departures that stunned fans, here are the 10 biggest Parramatta Eels moves of the 21st century—and how they set the tone for today’s blockbuster trade window.

Which clubs should be in the race to sign Simonsson? Eels give the all clear to negotiate with rivals | Sporting News Australia

🔟 Mitchell Moses Re-Signs (2023)

A saga that dragged for months finally ended with Mitchell Moses committing long-term to the Eels in a deal worth over $1 million per season. His re-signing reaffirmed Parramatta’s ambition to build their future around one of the NRL’s premier playmakers, keeping their spine stable for years to come.

9️⃣ Jarryd Hayne’s Return (2018)

After years away in the NFL and at the Titans, Hayne’s return to the blue and gold sparked huge excitement. While the second chapter didn’t hit the heights of his 2009 heroics, the move symbolized Parramatta’s emotional connection with their star fullback.

8️⃣ Nathan Hindmarsh’s One-Club Commitment (2001–2012)

While not a signing in the traditional sense, Hindmarsh’s refusal to ever leave Parramatta—despite massive offers from rival clubs—cemented his legacy as one of the most loyal and hardworking players in the game’s modern era.

7️⃣ Clint Gutherson Signs Extension (2022)

Captain “King Gutho” became the face of the club’s culture shift. His re-signing sent a strong message: leadership and consistency matter as much as marquee money. Gutherson’s retention ensured stability through coaching transitions and roster overhauls.

6️⃣ Junior Paulo Returns Home (2019)

After a stint with the Canberra Raiders, Paulo’s homecoming gave Parramatta one of the most dominant props in the competition. His combination of size, offloading ability, and leadership reshaped the Eels’ forward pack.

5️⃣ The Recruitment of Reagan Campbell-Gillard (2020)

Landing RCG from Penrith was one of the Eels’ smartest modern moves. His work rate and go-forward were crucial in taking Parramatta from mid-table to genuine contenders, culminating in their 2022 Grand Final run.

4️⃣ The Corey Norman–Mitchell Moses Transition (2017)

The mid-season reshuffle that saw Moses replace Norman as the team’s dominant playmaker marked a turning point. It realigned the Eels’ attack around structure and control, setting the foundation for the modern era.

3️⃣ The Signing of Blake Ferguson (2019)

Ferguson brought both power and personality to Parramatta’s backline. His arrival injected swagger into a team desperate for attacking flair and helped lead the Eels back into finals relevance after years in the wilderness.

2️⃣ The 2009 Jarryd Hayne–Fueled Revolution

While technically not a transfer, the recruitment of supporting stars around Hayne—such as Fui Fui Moi Moi and Krisnan Inu—created one of the most memorable late-season surges in NRL history. That run to the Grand Final remains a defining Eels moment.

🥇 The 2025 Free Agency Offensive

And now—perhaps the boldest move yet. The Eels are in talks to secure multiple marquee signings during the 2025 trade period, with reports linking them to Melbourne Storm halfback Jonah Pezet and several high-profile forwards. With a potential $3 million investment on the table, Parramatta’s 2025 campaign could redefine their trajectory for the next decade.

“This isn’t a rebuild,” one insider told The Daily Telegraph. “It’s a reinvention.”

If successful, 2025 could be remembered as the year Parramatta went all-in—once again proving that when it comes to headline-making moves, the Eels are never far from the centre of the storm.
