Swindon Town Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder Aidan Borland on loan from Aston Villa, with the Scottish youth international joining the Robins until the end of the current season.
Borland, a highly-rated central midfielder, arrives at the County Ground after progressing through the academies of Celtic and Aston Villa, and is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Villa’s development system.
Born in Glasgow, Borland began his footballing journey with Celtic before moving south to join Aston Villa’s academy in August 2023. His rapid development led to him signing his first professional contract in April 2024, committing his future to the Premier League club on a long-term deal.

The 18-year-old made his senior debut for Aston Villa in September 2024, coming off the bench in an EFL Cup victory away at Wycombe Wanderers. He continued to impress at youth level and played a key role in Villa’s FA Youth Cup success, starting and completing the full 90 minutes in the 2025 FA Youth Cup Final, where Villa defeated Manchester City U18s 3–1.
His performances were recognised at the highest level, with Borland named as one of the Premier League’s Scholars of the Year in May 2025, before signing a further long-term contract extension with Aston Villa.
On the international stage, Borland has represented Scotland at U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels, underlining his pedigree and experience despite his young age.
Borland now links up with Swindon Town as he looks to gain valuable first-team experience and add quality and energy to the midfield for the remainder of the season.
Everyone at Swindon Town would like to welcome Aidan to the club and wishes him every success in red.
