Roosters set to begin negotiations with star outside back

The Roosters are reportedly moving to secure star outside back Mark Nawaqanitawase to a long-term extension after rumours of rival clubs and codes circling grow hotter.

The 24-year-old has only played nine games for the tri-colours since moving over from rugby union where he made 11 appearances for the Wallabies.

In his last outing for the Roosters, Nawaqanitawase scored one of the tries of the season in an individual effort that has attracted viral attention.

On a recent episode of the Off the Record Podcast, Phil Rothfield of News Corp said that Nawaqanitawase’s manager is meeting with Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis to discuss the league converts future.

“I spoke to his manager this morning. He is heading in to see Nick Politis about a contract extension,” he said.

“They are looking for an upgrade to $700,000 and want to extend him for another two years.

“That try he scored against the Bulldogs was at an off-the-charts skill level.”

Nawaqanitawase was brought to the club in the 2025 offseason, at the same time that former Blues outside back Joesph Sua’ali’i went the opposite direction to the Waratahs.

“I’m told the reason he left rugby union was he got the s**ts over the Sua’ali’i contract. They offered him $1.5 million per year, and he got offered about $500,000,” said Rothfield.

“I think he’s already a better player than [Joseph] Sua’ali’i and he’s only played about 10 NRL games.”
