Dual code rising star Heinz Lemoto has decided to leave the Penrith Panthers and head to French rugby union, ending long-running speculation over his future.
Lemoto was a member of the Under-18s Australian Wallabies side in 2024 and 2025, as well as playing junior reps (Harold Matthews and SG Ball) at the Panthers over the past three seasons.
It has now been confirmed that the Scots College product has signed a rich deal with Toulouse, for now locking him in for a career in the 15-man code.
The Panthers flagged earlier this month that they would not be able to compete with the money on offer from rugby, after huge interest in the backrower.

Panthers’ Production Line Rolls On
While the departure is a blow, Penrith’s conveyor belt of talent ensures the club is well-positioned to absorb the loss. The Panthers’ junior pathways remain the envy of the NRL, and history suggests another prospect will quickly step into the spotlight.
Still, losing a homegrown prodigy — especially before his full potential is realised at NRL level — will sting.
A Growing Trend in the Modern Game
This move highlights a broader trend: young NRL players are no longer viewing overseas rugby as a last resort, but as a viable and attractive career option. With global contracts and lifestyle opportunities on offer, the pull of Europe continues to strengthen.
Final Word
The Panthers prodigy’s switch to French rugby may come earlier than many expected, but it reflects the changing landscape of professional sport. Ambition now stretches beyond borders — and for one young star, the next chapter will be written in Europe.
Penrith may have lost a talent.
French rugby may have just gained one.
