NSW State of Origin utility forward Connor Watson could be on the way out of the Sydney Roosters.
The 29-year-old has fallen down the selection pecking order in 2026 and become a regular face on the reserves bench, as the arrival of rep hooker Reece Robson from the Cowboys has coincided with the emergence of 22-year-old Samoan international Benaiah Ioelu.
While currently contracted until the end of 2027, the Daily Telegraph is reporting the Roosters will not stand in Watson’s way should he wish to pursue greater first-team minutes with an NRL rival and have allowed his management to explore opportunities.
Of course, it’s more than just altruism driving the Roosters’ seeming generosity.

Moving Watson’s salary off the club’s books a year early would also free up another significant chunk of the Roosters salary cap at a critical time for Trent Robinson’s squad.
Several key players are departing the Tricolours at the end of 2026 including rugby-bound stars Angus Crichton and Mark Nawaqanitawase, while others are nearing retirement including Daly Cherry-Evans and Daniel Tupou.
Able to play hooker or lock, a rep player of Watson’s experience and versatility will have no shortage of potential NRL suitors with Manly, Perth and the PNG Chiefs believed to be at the head of the queue as things currently stand.
For now Watson will come off the bench once again as Round 6 sees the Roosters face the Sharks in Perth on Saturday afternoon.
