The free-agent market for relief pitchers is gaining momentum, with the Philadelphia Phillies and three AL East teams reportedly expressing interest in one of MLB’s top closers. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, a “half dozen teams,” including the Toronto Blue Jays, are pursuing right-hander Carlos Estévez, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies. Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital identified the Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees among the other interested teams.
Estévez delivered an impressive 2024 season, recording 26 saves and a 2.45 ERA across 54 appearances. Over the last two seasons, he has struck out 128 batters in 117.1 innings, posted a 3.22 ERA, and amassed 57 saves. Acquired by the Phillies from the Angels last July, Estévez had not surrendered an earned run in nearly two months at the time of the trade.
Signed by the Angels in December 2022 to a two-year, $13.5 million deal, Estévez has since proven his value as a reliable closer under playoff pressure, positioning himself for a significant pay raise in free agency.
The Phillies, who are looking to strengthen their bullpen after a disappointing Division Series exit, appear unlikely to retain both Hoffman—who may transition back to a starter role—and Estévez.
Estévez, a 2023 All-Star with the Angels, turned 32 in December and boasts a 27-31 career record over 438 games since debuting with the Colorado Rockies in 2016. A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he remains one of the most sought-after relievers in the market as teams seek to solidify their bullpens for the 2025 season.
