JUST IN : Yankees Still in Play for $27 Million Infielder After Reds Trade for Gavin Lux

On Monday night, ESPN’s Jeff Passan broke the news that the Los Angeles Dodgers are trading infielder Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange, the Dodgers are reportedly acquiring outfield prospect Mike Sirota and a competitive balance draft pick.

Lux is set to join the Reds, teaming up with Elly De La Cruz and manager Terry Francona as Cincinnati aims to contend for the National League Central title.

However, Lux’s move to Cincinnati may not be set in stone. According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, while the Dodgers-Reds trade is finalized, there’s a possibility Lux could be flipped to the New York Yankees. Bowden noted on Twitter/X that there’s “a chance Lux gets spun to the Yankees,” though he later clarified that the Reds are not currently planning to trade Lux.

Before this deal, the Yankees were considered strong contenders to acquire Lux, who fits a key infield need for the team at a manageable cost—an important factor after New York’s expensive offseason.

For the Reds to trade Lux at this point, they would likely demand major-league-ready talent in return. Since hiring Francona, Cincinnati has made several win-now moves, and acquiring Lux is another step toward contention. Any trade involving Lux would need to fit the Reds’ competitive timeline.

One potential trade scenario could involve the Yankees offering outfield prospect Everson Pereira. While Pereira is less established than Lux, he could address a greater need for Cincinnati.

For now, Lux is on his way to Cincinnati, leaving the Yankees to explore other options for bolstering their infield. Whether they revisit the idea of acquiring Lux or shift their focus elsewhere remains to be seen.
