James Tedesco sends emotional gift to young hero after dog attack

A terrifying afternoon, a boy’s unbreakable courage, and the moment Australia’s finest fullback reminded us that sport is about so much more than football.

James Tedesco has long been celebrated as one of rugby league’s most complete players — but it is his character off the field that defines him most.

It started as an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in the quiet Western Sydney suburb of Pendle Hill. Eight-year-old Luca Moretti was walking his neighbour’s golden Labrador along the footpath outside his home when, without warning, two large dogs broke through a front fence and lunged. What followed was harrowing. But what Luca did next left his entire community — and eventually, the whole of rugby league — in awe.

Rather than run, Luca stood his ground. He placed himself between the attacking dogs and his four-year-old sister Aria, who had been walking beside him. He screamed for help, waved his arms, and kept Aria pinned safely behind him until a neighbour rushed out to intervene. By the time paramedics arrived, Luca had sustained deep lacerations to his left arm and shoulder. He was rushed to Westmead Children’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

He never cried. Not once.

Word spreads fast

The story made local news within hours, shared first by Luca’s mother, Daniela, on a community Facebook group with a simple caption: “My boy protected his sister today. I don’t have the words.” Within 24 hours it had been shared over 40,000 times. By Wednesday morning, it had reached national breakfast television.

Somewhere in that flood of shares and reposts, it reached the phone of Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco.

“My sister sent it to me,” Tedesco said later. “I read it and I just sat there for a minute. This little kid — eight years old — putting himself between his sister and those dogs. That’s bravery you can’t coach. That’s just pure heart.”

“He didn’t think about himself for one second. That’s the kind of person rugby league needs more of. That’s the kind of person the world needs more of.”

— James Tedesco, Sydney Roosters captain

A package arrives at Westmead

Three days after the attack, a nurse on Luca’s ward approached his bed with a large cardboard box bearing the Sydney Roosters logo. Inside, wrapped carefully in tissue paper, was a signed match-worn Roosters jersey — Tedesco’s own number one — along with a handwritten letter, a signed poster, and two tickets to the Roosters’ upcoming home game at Allianz Stadium.

The letter, which Daniela later shared (with Tedesco’s permission) read in part:

“Luca, my name is James, and I play fullback for the Roosters. My job is to be the last line of defence — to protect the team. But I’ve never done anything as brave as what you did for your sister. You’re a real fullback, mate. Wear this jersey with pride, because you’ve earned it more than I have. Get well soon. The Roosters are cheering for you.”

Daniela Moretti said she read it aloud to Luca, who had been quiet and withdrawn since the surgery. When she finished, he looked up at the jersey — the famous red, white and blue — and asked one question.

“Can I wear it now?”

The photo heard around the league

A photo taken by a hospital nurse that afternoon showed Luca sitting up in his hospital bed, his left arm in a sling, wearing Tedesco’s oversized number one jersey and grinning from ear to ear. It was posted to the Roosters’ official Instagram account with a single line of caption: “Luca, you’re one of us now.”

The comments section became something rare on the internet — genuinely wholesome. Players from rival clubs, including Melbourne Storm captain Harry Grant and Broncos halfback Ezra Mam, left personal messages. Even the Kangaroos official account chimed in with a simple red heart emoji.

Former Roosters coach Trent Robinson, who worked with Tedesco for nearly a decade, said the gesture was entirely in keeping with the man he knew. “James has always been the first to show up for people,” Robinson told The Daily Telegraph. “Not for the cameras, not for the likes. He just genuinely cares. That’s been true since the day I met him.”

More than a game

Rugby league has had its share of troubled headlines in recent years. Controversies, suspensions, and governance disputes have tested the patience of even the most devoted fans. Moments like this — unscripted, unsponsored, and entirely human — are a reminder of what the game can be at its best.

Tedesco, who won the 2025 Dally M Medal and led the Roosters back into finals football, is widely regarded as the finest fullback of his generation. A two-time premiership winner and World Cup champion, his rugby league resume is beyond reproach. But the box that arrived at Westmead Children’s Hospital on a Thursday afternoon said more about his legacy than any trophy ever could.

Sport, at its most meaningful, has always been a mirror. It reflects who we are, what we value, and how we treat the most vulnerable among us. In that photo of Luca Moretti — sling on his arm, jersey hanging off his small frame, the biggest smile you’ve ever seen — you can see all of it at once.

A boy who protected his sister. A champion who saw himself in that boy. And a game, for one brief and beautiful moment, at its very best.

“Rugby league gave me everything. Moments like this remind me why I still play.”

— James Tedesco

Luca Moretti was discharged from Westmead Children’s Hospital eight days after the attack. He walked out wearing a certain number one jersey. His sister Aria held his good hand the whole way to the car.
