With the Broncos hit by a growing injury crisis, coach Michael Maguire has thrown his support behind veteran playmaker Ben Hunt, backing him to guide the side through one of its toughest stretches of the season.
Several key players, including star halfback Adam Reynolds and utility back Selwyn Cobbo, are sidelined with injuries, leaving the Broncos scrambling to maintain their finals push. But Maguire remains confident that Hunt, who returned to Brisbane earlier this year after a long stint with the Dragons, has what it takes to lead from the front.
“The heat is on, but that’s exactly when you need experience like Ben’s,” Maguire said at training on Friday. “He’s been in big moments, he’s led teams through pressure, and I’ve got no doubt he’ll step up again.”
Hunt, 35, is no stranger to the high expectations of Brisbane fans, having begun his NRL career at the club over a decade ago. Now, with the Broncos’ finals hopes hanging in the balance, all eyes are on the veteran half to deliver.
“Obviously we’ve lost a few key guys, but that’s footy,” Hunt said. “I’m here to do my job and help the team stay focused. We’ve still got plenty of belief in this squad.”
The Broncos face the Storm next weekend in what could be a make-or-break clash. With Hunt now taking charge of the playmaking duties, Maguire is urging his side to rally behind their leader.
“He’s been there, done that. Now it’s time to do it again.”
