Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has been left with a massive dilemma following star forward Keaon Koloamatangi’s decision to join the Dragons on a five-year deal.
Angry fans have called for the big man to be dropped to NSW Cup next season before joining the Dragons in 2027 on what is estimated to be a $5 million contract.
It is a move Bennett may consider — he famously dumped Justin Hodges in 2001 after the star Broncos centre announced he had signed with the Roosters.
Koloamatangi is now on a 10-day cooling off period – but is unlikely to change his mind with such a lucrative deal from the Red V on the table.
Bennett is certain to meet with South Sydney management in coming days to discuss how to best handle the situation.
A local junior who became a Test and State of Origin player through the club’s system, Koloamatangi was a key man in Souths’ plans to become a powerhouse again and angry fans vented their frustration on social media when news of his departure leaked.
Russell Owen urged the club to “stand him down now if he has abandoned the Bunnies then his allegiance is compromised for 2026” while another fan Frank Fenech said Bennett should “drop him to reserve bench for 12 months” on social media.
In fairness, several fans also didn’t begrudge the big forward for taking the huge deal from the Dragons, who have been desperate for a marquee player for some time.
