Coventry City boss Frank Lampard bemoans penalty decision and makes Sheffield Wednesday admission

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard was adamant his side should have been awarded a second half penalty in their 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon.

On what was a frustrating afternoon from a Sky Blues point a view, they felt they should have been awarded a penalty in the second half when a cross from the right appeared to strike Tayo Adaramola on the arm.

The Sky Blues, who went into the contest knowing a victory would put them on the cusp of promotion, turned the screw in the second half in their pursuit of an opening goal, but they were up against a stubborn and resilient Wednesday side.

The Owls defended heroically in the East Midlands, heading and kicking away everything their hosts threw at them. However, Lampard felt his side should have been given a chance to break the deadlock from the penalty spot.

“It’s a penalty,” Lampard insisted. “It’s a penalty as it was at Hull, as it was against Derby, which has now been acknowledged.

“The three games and three penalty decisions against, to add to the list.”

Lampard, who will be hoping his side will seal their place in the Premier League when they face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park next Friday night, requiring just three more points from their last four games to seal the deal, felt his side did enough to win the game, but he credited Wednesday for defending so well.

“We obviously created enough to win the game, but we didn’t quite do it,” he added. “You have to credit the opposition for making it difficult for you.

“But when a team has nothing to gain as such, they also have nothing to lose. I think they’ve got a manager that’s very driven and trying to, you know, do his job as well as he possibly can.

“So they were always going to make it as hard as they could, and, unfortunately, we couldn’t get a breakthrough, even with the possession and the crosses and the chances that we had.”
