BREAKING: More devastating news from 3 Virginia Tech key players

Virginia Tech’s Three Biggest Losses in the Transfer Portal

Which players leaving through the transfer portal represent the biggest setbacks for Virginia Tech? A year ago, head coach Brent Pry was lauded for retaining key players, fueling hopes for a strong Hokies run and a potential berth in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. Those aspirations, however, never materialized.

When the transfer portal opened, Virginia Tech experienced a significant talent exodus, contrasting sharply with last year’s stability. Several key starters departed, leaving major gaps on the roster for the 2025 season. Among the players lost, three stand out as the most impactful departures:

1. Xavier Chaplin

Xavier Chaplin, arguably the Hokies’ top offensive lineman last season, dealt with injuries but still emerged as a critical player. His loss further weakens an offensive line that already struggled and ultimately led to the dismissal of offensive line coach Ron Crook. New coordinator Matt Moore is tasked with rebuilding the line, bringing in transfers from West Virginia to help fill the void.

Chaplin didn’t remain unattached for long, finding a new home in the SEC with Auburn. His departure is considered the biggest blow for Pry and his coaching staff this offseason.

Mose Phillips was a rising star in Virginia Tech’s secondary. After an impressive spring and summer camp, Phillips delivered a solid 2024 season, playing all 12 games and recording 65 tackles (34 solo), including standout performances against Rutgers, Clemson, and Tulane in the Military Bowl. His versatility allowed the Hokies to use him effectively in various defensive schemes, and he also contributed with an interception and a forced fumble.

With Virginia Tech’s secondary already hit hard by transfers, losing Phillips to Missouri in the SEC is a major setback. He was a bright spot in the defense, and replacing his production will be a significant challenge for the Hokies in 2025.

3. Mansoor Delane

Mansoor Delane, a cornerstone of Virginia Tech’s secondary, surprised many by entering the transfer portal rather than declaring for the NFL Draft. Delane was a consistent performer, tying his career-high with 54 tackles last season, along with four interceptions and two forced fumbles. While he occasionally allowed explosive plays, his overall impact far outweighed any lapses.

Delane’s decision to transfer to LSU bolsters an already competitive Tiger secondary, leaving a notable void in the Hokies’ defense. His departure caps a tough offseason for Virginia Tech and presents Pry with yet another challenge to address before the 2025 campaign.

These three losses underscore the uphill battle Virginia Tech faces as they rebuild for next season. The coaching staff must not only replace these key contributors but also navigate a changing roster dynamic to remain competitive.
