Bolton Wanderers: Will Forrester on Wycombe stalemate

Will Forrester hailed his team-mates as Wanderers showed their inner steel to keep a clean sheet at leaders Wycombe.

With Ricardo Santos and George Johnston both suspended, Forrester slotted into the back three alongside Gethin Jones and Josh Dacres-Cogley.

Randell Williams also returned to the side at wing-back, with Jordi Osei-Tutu out injured, and made some important contributions.

“A really good point,” Forrester reflected. “Obviously, Wycombe are flying this season and we knew it would be a tough place to come.

“It is always a tough place and the way they play in transitions is so effective. We knew that we had to defend as a team and defend our box really well, which I think we did.

“We had suspensions and two big players missing but I thought me, Cogs and Geth stepped in well.

“We defended well and managed to get a clean sheet, which we needed as a team. Hopefully, we can build on that.”

The 23-year-old centre-back found himself at the thick of the action against the Chairboys, making 12 clearances, including seven headers, and two blocks.

“I love defending,” he smiled. “It’s what I am, a defender. I like to have the ball as well, I can play, but when my back’s up against the wall that is when I really thrive.”

Wanderers nearly won it at the death but Franco Ravizzoli did well to keep hold of George Thomason’s volley which travelled through a sea of bodies in the box.

“We were just saying we were unlucky not to win the game, the keeper has done really well,” Forrester added.

“The performance overall was much better than last week but now we need to keep that consistency and not let our levels drop too low, which they have done at times this season.

“Everyone was distraught (after Wigan). It has been – not a miserable place – but very down, which was understandable.

“We knew that we had to come here and put in a big performance. I think we did and we came away with a decent point in the end, we should have come away with three potentially.”

Despite the 350-mile round trip, five days before Christmas, Wanderers supporters travelled in numbers and made plenty of noise throughout the contest.

“They were excellent, they always are,” the defender insisted. “They have had to watch some performances which haven’t been up to the standards we know we can hit.

“We need them more than ever to stick with us, which they are doing, and hopefully we can repay them and kick on.

“I think we can really build on that and hopefully get that consistency we showed last season.”
