Raiders Put Ethans on Ice for Season Opener

The Canberra Raiders have made an early selection call ahead of Round 1 — and it involves both of their Ethans.

In a move that signals caution rather than concern, the Raiders are expected to hold back Ethan Strange and Ethan Sanders for the season opener, opting instead for experience and stability in the halves.

Why the Call?

Pre-season form from both players has been promising, but with the intensity of Round 1 footy looming, coach Ricky Stuart appears to be prioritising control and defensive steel. Early rounds can define momentum — especially for a side with genuine top-four ambitions.

Strange, coming off a breakout campaign, has been managing minor niggles through the trials, while Sanders is still adjusting to Canberra’s structures after his arrival. Neither omission is viewed as long-term.

Strategic, Not Reactive

Insiders suggest the decision is about timing. The Raiders see both Ethans as major parts of their future spine, but throwing them straight into a high-pressure opener may not align with the broader season blueprint.

Depth in key positions is a luxury few clubs possess. Canberra appears determined to use it wisely.

What It Means for Round 1

Expect a more seasoned playmaking combination to steer the side through the opening clash — particularly in game management and territory control. It’s a signal that the Raiders are thinking long-term rather than chasing early headlines.

One thing is clear: the Ethans aren’t out of the picture. They’re simply on ice — and likely waiting for the right moment to make their impact.
