‘It Wasn’t a Fluke’: Raiders Set Sights on Avoiding Unwanted NRL Finals Stat

The Canberra Raiders are determined to prove their recent surge wasn’t a one-off, with club leaders adamant that last season’s performances were no fluke as they set their sights on avoiding an unwanted NRL finals statistic.

After pushing deep into the finals conversation and showing clear signs of growth, the Raiders are now focused on backing it up — a challenge that has historically tripped up clubs who break through one year, only to slide backwards the next.

“We know what people are saying,” one senior Raiders figure said. “They think it was a flash in the pan. But inside the club, we know the work that went into it. It wasn’t a fluke.”

The statistic Canberra is desperate to avoid is becoming a familiar one across the NRL: teams who make the finals after a rebuild phase, only to miss the eight the following season. It’s a trend that has haunted several clubs over the past decade and one the Raiders are keenly aware of heading into the new campaign.

Coach Ricky Stuart has doubled down on standards throughout the off-season, pushing accountability and consistency as non-negotiables. The message has been clear — improvement means nothing unless it’s sustained.

Canberra’s confidence is built on a hardened forward pack, emerging young talent, and a leadership group that believes the squad is only scratching the surface of its potential. Internally, there is a strong belief the Raiders are no longer rebuilding, but transitioning into a genuine finals mainstay.

“There’s a difference between sneaking into the finals and belonging there,” the source added. “This group believes it belongs.”

The Raiders’ challenge now is translating belief into results week after week. With rival clubs circling and expectations rising, Canberra understands the margin for error is slim — but that pressure is being embraced rather than feared.

As the season approaches, one thing is clear: the Raiders aren’t interested in being labelled a temporary success story. They’re out to prove their finals push was the beginning, not the peak.
