Three Key Sydney Roosters Players Who Must Improve in 2026

The Sydney Roosters enter 2026 at a crossroads. With expectations as high as ever and standards being reset under a demanding system, improvement is no longer optional — even for established names.

While the Roosters boast elite talent across the park, several key players will come under increased scrutiny this season. For different reasons, each must elevate their output if the club is to return to genuine premiership contention.

Here are three Sydney Roosters players who must improve in 2026.

1. Connor Watson

Watson’s value to the Roosters has never been questioned — his versatility, work rate, and competitiveness remain elite. However, in a squad seeking greater clarity and consistency, Watson must translate energy into sustained influence.

Too often in recent seasons, his impact has come in bursts rather than over full matches. With roles becoming more defined, 2026 shapes as a critical year for Watson to lock down a position and deliver week-to-week authority rather than situational spark.

Consistency, not versatility, will define his season.

2. Sitili Tupouniua

Tupouniua’s physical gifts are undeniable, but his development has stalled at times due to injuries and interruptions. When fit, he offers power, aggression, and line-breaking ability — traits the Roosters desperately need through the middle.

In 2026, the challenge is availability and discipline. The Roosters need Tupouniua on the field, playing long minutes and imposing himself physically. Potential is no longer enough; production must follow.

If he can stay healthy, his upside remains enormous.

3. Joseph Suaalii

For all his talent and versatility, Suaalii remains one of the Roosters’ most scrutinised figures. His athleticism and composure are elite, but questions persist around his positional certainty and involvement across games.

In 2026, the expectation will be for Suaalii to demand the ball, impose himself defensively, and consistently influence outcomes. Brilliance in moments must become dominance across matches.

At this stage of his career, presence matters as much as potential.

The Bigger Picture

Under the Roosters’ evolving system, reputation will not shield performance. Improvement will be measured in reliability, durability, and authority — not highlights.

For these three players, 2026 represents more than just another season. It’s an opportunity to reset narratives, cement roles, and prove they can carry the responsibility that comes with wearing the jersey.

The margin between promise and premiership contention is thin. Closing it will require more — from everyone.
