Sydney Roosters May Not Be Done With Joey Manu and Joseph Suaalii Just Yet

Just when it appeared the Sydney Roosters were preparing to turn the page on two of their biggest modern stars, fresh whispers suggest the Bondi club may not be finished with Joey Manu and Joseph Suaalii after all.

Both players have been widely linked with moves away — Manu with opportunities abroad and Suaalii already locked into a high-profile switch to rugby union — but the Roosters’ long-term thinking could yet leave the door ajar for future returns.

NRL 2022: Sydney Roosters, Joseph Suaalii, Joey Manu, centres, five-eighth, positional switch

The Roosters’ Long Game

The Roosters are renowned for playing the long game better than most clubs. Rather than burning bridges, they have a history of maintaining strong relationships with departing stars — something that could prove crucial with Manu and Suaalii.

Insiders suggest the club views both players not as “lost assets,” but as potential future returnees, whether that be in the NRL or across codes. With elite talent at a premium, the Roosters are unlikely to completely close the door on two players who understand the club’s culture and expectations.

Joey Manu: Not a Full Stop?

Joey Manu’s future has long been the subject of speculation, with overseas opportunities offering both lifestyle and financial appeal. However, those close to the situation believe Manu’s bond with the Roosters remains strong.

Should his overseas venture be short-term, the Roosters are seen as a natural landing spot if he chooses to return to the NRL — particularly given their ability to structure deals creatively and fast-track elite players back into leadership roles.

Suaalii: A Future Homecoming?

Joseph Suaalii’s switch to rugby union has been framed as a defining career move, but the Roosters are said to view it as a chapter, not an ending.

Still young and already a proven NRL match-winner, Suaalii could realistically return to league in the future with enhanced skill sets, physical development and global experience. The Roosters’ investment in his early career — both on and off the field — positions them well if that day comes.

Why the Roosters Would Welcome Them Back

From a football perspective, the appeal is obvious:

  • Elite athleticism and versatility
  • Big-game experience
  • Deep understanding of Roosters standards and systems

From a commercial standpoint, both players remain enormous drawcards — something the Roosters have never ignored when planning long-term.

Reality Check

None of this guarantees a return, and much will depend on timing, salary cap flexibility and how each player’s career unfolds. But one thing is clear: the Roosters are not the type of club to shut doors on generational talent.

Final Word

Joey Manu and Joseph Suaalii may be stepping away from the NRL spotlight — for now. But don’t be surprised if the Roosters’ story with both stars isn’t finished just yet.

In Bondi, chapters have a habit of reopening. 🐓🔥
