Eagles lose to Commanders, blow No. 2 seed: Who will they face in the playoffs?

The Philadelphia Eagles now know what their seed will be and who they’ll play in the first round of the NFL playoffs.

The Eagles will be the NFC’s No. 3 seed in the postseason after losing to the Washington Commanders in Week 18 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles will face the No. 6 seed San Francisco 49ers at the Linc in the NFC Wild Card round after the Los Angeles Rams secured the No. 5 seed by beating the Arizona Cardinals.

Nick Sirianni

Nick Sirianni and the Eagles, who rested their starters against Washington, entered Week 18 with a chance at the NFC’s No. 2 seed.

The defending Super Bowl champions needed two things to happen to secure the No. 2 seed. The Eagles (11-6) needed to beat the Commanders (5-12), and they needed the Chicago Bears (11-6) to lose to the Detroit Lions (9-8) at Soldier Field.

The Lions did their part. Jared Goff and Detroit went into Chicago and beat the Bears, 19-16, thanks to a walk-off 42-yard field goal by Jake Bates.

But the Eagles failed to do their part. Tanner McKee, Tank Bigsby and Co. played fine. But a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns by the Commanders doomed Philly’s No. 2 seed hopes.

Now, the Eagles will need to beat Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers (12-5) at home in the NFC Wild Card round. If they win and the Bears win, the Eagles would go to Chicago for the NFC Divisional round.
