Sydney Roosters Could Start NRL Season Without More Than Half of Last Year’s First-Choice Team

The Sydney Roosters are facing a challenging start to the new NRL season, with the club in danger of lining up without more than half of last year’s first-choice side due to a combination of injuries, suspensions, representative duties and roster changes.

The disruption presents a significant early-season test for coach Trent Robinson, who may be forced to rely heavily on squad depth and emerging talent while several established stars remain unavailable.

Key Absences Loom Large

A number of players who formed the backbone of the Roosters’ preferred 17 last season are either sidelined or under a cloud for Round 1. Long-term injuries, delayed recoveries from off-season surgery, and representative commitments have all contributed to a depleted roster on the eve of the campaign.

The situation means Sydney could field a starting line-up featuring multiple players who were not regular starters last year — a rare scenario for one of the competition’s most stable clubs.

Opportunity for Next Generation

While the absences pose obvious challenges, they also open the door for younger players and fringe squad members to stake their claim.

The Roosters have invested heavily in development pathways, and coaching staff believe the club’s next wave is capable of stepping up if required. Several train-and-trial players and recent signings are now pushing for early-season debuts or expanded roles.

Robinson’s Balancing Act

Trent Robinson is expected to take a measured approach, prioritising long-term health over rushing players back prematurely. The Roosters’ history of managing workloads carefully suggests patience will be key, even if results are harder to come by in the opening rounds.

“We’re not interested in winning Round 1 at the expense of the season,” has long been the club’s philosophy — and that mindset may again come into play.

Early Test of Depth and Systems

Sydney’s strong systems and standards will now be tested more than ever. Defensive structures, discipline, and cohesion will be crucial as the Roosters attempt to navigate the opening weeks with a reshuffled side.

Opposition teams are expected to target the Roosters early, aware of the unusual vulnerability in their line-up.

Looking Ahead

While the short-term outlook is challenging, the Roosters remain confident that once their full-strength squad returns, they will again be a force in the competition.

For now, though, the spotlight will be firmly on how Sydney copes without the familiar faces that have defined recent seasons — and whether the next generation is ready to seize its moment.
