Broncos weapon Payne Haas set for bombshell code switch

Broncos weapon Payne Haas has reportedly had a change of heart at the 11th hour as he prepares to announce his future plans.

Broncos weapon Payne Haas has reportedly had a change of heart and is now leaning towards leaving the club.

The star prop has been aggressively chased by R360 and the rogue rugby organisation is now confident he will agree to a code hop, Code Sports reports.

According to the report, Haas is considering a groundbreaking offer worth up to $3 million per-season.

It has been widely reported the Broncos are only able to offer up to $1.2 million per season — stretched through to the end of the 2029 season.

The possible code hop will be the biggest decision of Haas’ career as he faces the threat of being exiled from the NRL.

There will be no coming back to the NRL for Haas if he does make the move to rugby and then considers a return to rugby league.

NRL supremo Peter V’landys has threatened to hand out 10-year bans to any player that signs with R360.

According to Code Sports, Haas has no desire to walk out on the final year of his deal in 2026.

It leaves the Broncos in salary cap chaos as the club looks to land an elite prop to replace the Samoan superstar.

Haas was last month mentioned as one of 10 NRL players reportedly considering offers from R360.

The Broncos’ $1.2m per-season offer is the richest contract offer for a forward in Broncos history and puts the 118kg athletic machine on par with the highest paid playmakers in the NRL.

The 25-year-old has cemented himself as the premier prop in the NRL.

Parramatta’s Zac Lomax, former Storm gun Ryan Papenhuyzen and enforcer Nelson Asofa-Solomona are the other stars linked with the rebel operation.

R360 will have franchises in London, Miami, Tokyo, Dubai, Boston, Cape Town, Lisbon and Madrid — the kicker is players will be allowed to choose their place of residence, meaning players can earn tax free salaries by basing themselves in Dubai.

The Australian reported R360 is offering NRL and Australian rugby union players tax free deals worth more than US$1million (A$1.5 million).

Rabbitohs fullback Jye Gray has reportedly been offered $900,000 while, New Zealand Warriors veteran Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has already agreed to a deal to join R360.

R360 as a concept has drawn comparisons to LIV Golf, and there are doubts about the sustainability of the competition with teams based around the world and YouTube as the broadcast partner.

V’landys has kept the door open for some players to have their 10-year bans overturned, however, he said it would only be “in exceptionally extenuating circumstances”

“The commission has a clear duty to act in the best interests of rugby league and its fans – and we will take all necessary steps to protect the future of the game,” V’landys said.

“Unfortunately, there will always be organisations that seek to pirate our game for potential financial gain. They don’t invest in pathways or the development of players – they simply exploit the hard work of others, putting players at risk of financial loss while profiting themselves. They are, in reality, counterfeiting a code.

“Accordingly, if it all goes wrong it’s the players who suffer most. Every stakeholder must be accountable to the standards our fans expect. We’ve listened to our clubs, and we’ve acted decisively.”

It comes after the governing bodies of the major rugby nations, including Rugby Australia, vowed to ban any players who join R360 from playing international football.
