Roosters secure two key re-signings ahead of new campaign

The Sydney Roosters have reaffirmed their commitment to the future by locking in two important players to new contracts, signalling stability and ambition ahead of the upcoming season.

The club confirmed that Connor Watson and Spencer Leniu have both re-committed, each signing extensions that will keep them in the Tricolours’ colours through to the end of 2027.

Roosters, Eels and Sharks add pre-finals drubbings to one-sided round of NRL - ABC News

Players & what they mean

  • Connor Watson (28) has been with the Roosters since 2016 (making his debut there) and has racked up 141 first-grade games, 75 of which have been with the Roosters.
  • Spencer Leniu (23) made his club debut in Round 1 of the 2024 NRL season and is already a three-time premiership winner. His size, carry work and defensive presence have made him a rising fan-favourite.

Club reaction & significance

Head Coach Trent Robinson described Watson as “a highly-valued member of this Club for both the player and person he is… respected as a leading voice within our squad and community.”
He also remarked on Leniu’s promising trajectory: “He has the trust and respect of his teammates … looking forward to watching him continue to build as a player and person over the next few years.”

By securing both players until 2027, the Roosters are emphasising their commitment to maintain a core group amid an era of increasing player movement and contract churn. The club clearly sees Watson’s experience and leadership as essential, while Leniu represents the youth and power they’ll build around.

What this means for the squad

  • Stability & leadership: Watson’s extension ensures the club retains a seasoned campaigner who can guide younger players and help uphold culture and standards.
  • Emerging potential: Leniu’s commitment means one of the club’s up-and-comers remains in the fold during his pivotal early career years.
  • Retention message: The two deals send a signal to the rest of the squad (and rival clubs) that the Roosters intend to keep their building blocks in place.
  • Balancing the roster: With both experience and youth secured, the club is better positioned to manage both short-term performance and long-term succession.

Looking ahead

With the 2025 season looming, the Roosters will now look to build momentum around this core group, integrating new talent, and maximising the contribution of Watson and Leniu. The expectation is clear: these players will be central to the club’s push for finals success.

How the remaining squad changes, and how these extensions influence recruitment strategy and player retention across the board, will be key stories in the coming months.
