More Changes at Penrith Panthers as another big name Set to Depart After Three Years Back

As the Penrith Panthers prepare for the 2026 season, further restructuring is underway — Daine Laurie is among the players set to leave the club when his contract ends. The fullback-utility has not been offered a renewal and will part ways after three seasons in his second spell in Penrith.

A Journey Full of Movement

Laurie’s career with the Panthers has been something of a full loop. He came up through Penrith’s junior ranks (SG Ball, Jersey Flegg, NSW Cup) and made his NRL debut with them in 2020.

He then spent three seasons (2021-2023) at the Wests Tigers, before returning to Penrith ahead of the 2024 season.

Role, Position & Playing Time

Since returning, Laurie has been a versatile squad member. He has filled in at several back-positions and provided depth, often used behind established players—especially fullback Dylan Edwards, who holds down the No. 1 shirt.

Despite this, Laurie hasn’t been able to lock in a starting role. Injury interruptions, limited opportunities, and the presence of incumbents ahead of him have meant his on-field contributions have been somewhat irregular.

Reasons & Timing for the Departure

  • Laurie does not yet have a contract lined up for the 2026 season.
  • The Panthers have informed him they will not be renewing his deal beyond 2025.
  • Laurie himself has said he is “open to anything” for next year — willing to explore options but also hopeful of staying if a role emerges.

Implications for Penrith & Laurie

For the Panthers, Laurie’s exit is part of a larger reshuffle — the club has announced 13 departures for the upcoming off-season (2026) including some more high-profile names.

Laurie’s departure raises questions about depth in certain back-line positions, especially for backup/fullback roles, and whether the club will promote from within their pathways system or sign externally to fill those spots.

For Laurie, this is another transition point in his career. Nearing 30 NRL matches in his second stint and with experience across multiple positions, he will likely be attractive to clubs seeking a versatile back somewhere in the starting 17 or as dependable cover/swing-player.
