Sydney Roosters’ $2.5m Cash Splash as NRL Free Agency Floodgates Open

The Sydney Roosters have wasted no time diving head-first into the 2026 NRL free agency market, preparing a $2.5 million recruitment blitz aimed at reshaping their roster for the next phase of Trent Robinson’s premiership push.

With several big names off contract and a handful of emerging stars being targeted by rival clubs, the Roosters are ready to move decisively — and expensively.

💰 Big Money, Big Moves

Sources close to the Bondi club have confirmed that the Roosters have freed up significant salary cap space through strategic exits, including the departures of Angus Crichton, Terrell May, and Sitili Tupouniua, creating room for a major spending spree.

The $2.5 million war chest is reportedly being directed toward two marquee signings and several rising talents, with the club’s recruitment team focusing on playmaking depth and power in the middle third.

Among the headline names on their radar is Jonah Pezet, the young Melbourne Storm half tipped as a future representative star. The Roosters are believed to be preparing a lucrative long-term offer that could include triggering Pezet’s release clause to secure him as early as 2026.

A club insider told The Telegraph:

“We’re not rebuilding — we’re reloading. The plan is to target smart, not just spend big. The next two years are about building another premiership core.”

🧩 Roosters’ Recruitment Strategy

The Roosters’ aggressive play comes as the NRL’s new free agency period officially opens, with several clubs ready to reshape their rosters for the 2026 season and beyond.

Their focus is clear:

  • Halfback Depth: with Luke Keary entering the twilight of his career, the club sees Pezet as the natural successor.
  • Forward Power: potential targets include Addin Fonua-Blake (Warriors) and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui (Titans), both viewed as franchise-level enforcers.
  • Backline Renewal: the Roosters are also monitoring off-contract outside backs, including Joseph Manu, whose future remains uncertain amid strong rugby union interest.

⚡ Free Agency Frenzy

The 2026 market is already shaping as one of the most competitive in years. Clubs such as the Bulldogs, Eels, and Wests Tigers are also cashed up, meaning the Roosters will face fierce competition for elite talent.

However, as history shows, when the Roosters open the chequebook — they usually land their man.

“Every player in the game knows what joining the Roosters means,” said one senior player manager. “It’s not just money — it’s culture, it’s success, and it’s the chance to play finals every year.”

🏆 Eyes on the Prize

After an inconsistent 2025 campaign that ended short of a Grand Final berth, coach Trent Robinson and the Roosters’ recruitment team have vowed to return to dominance.

If they land their prime targets, particularly Jonah Pezet and one marquee forward, the Bondi club could once again field one of the most formidable lineups in the competition — and reassert themselves as the NRL’s ultimate destination club.
