49ers Urged to Bench Brock Purdy Against Rams

The San Francisco 49ers did not look good against the Jacksonville Jaguars. When all was said and done, Brock Purdy and company ended up losing the game by a final score of 26-21 to drop to 3-1 on the season.

While it was just one loss, Purdy looked really rough. Coming off of missing time due to shoulder and toe injuries, he did not look like himself. Something still appeared to be off.

Throughout the course of the game, Purdy completed 22 of his 38 pass attempts for 309 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble. Those mistakes were too much for the 49ers to overcome.

Kyle Shanahan, the team’s head coach, spoke out about Purdy and revealed that he was dealing with some toe issues during the game.

With that being said, San Francisco has a short week ahead. The 49ers will hit the road to take on the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 5 NFL action.

Ahead of that matchup, one team insider believes that San Francisco should bench Purdy. Grant Cohn of San Francisco 49ers on SI has suggested that the team sit Purdy this week against the Rams since he’s still dealing with an injury.

“Anyone with eyes could see that Purdy’s toe was bothering him,” Cohn wrote. “And if it’s sore today, it probably will be sore on Thursday when the 49ers play the Rams in Los Angeles. And that means Purdy should not play. The 49ers should rest him until his toe is 100 percent recovered. Because right now, he’s a liability.”

Cohn is 100 percent right. Purdy was a total liability against the Jaguars. He was able to produce some decent numbers, but the turnovers were a problem and he simply did not look right.

Purdy needs to get back to 100 percent and that is hard to do playing week in and week out. In his absence, Mac Jones stepped in and played admirably, leading the 49ers to two wins. He threw for 563 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception, while completing 66.3 percent of his passes.

If Purdy is indeed still in pain on Thursday, San Francisco should take Cohn’s advice. Give Jones the start and let Purdy continue healing until he’s back to full health and is able to play to the best of his ability.
