In a rare and candid move, the NRL has officially acknowledged multiple officiating errors that impacted key matches involving the Penrith Panthers this season. The league confirmed that internal reviews identified mistakes made by several referees and Bunker officials, including Gerard Sutton and Ashley Klein, during crucial moments of games.
NRL Head of Football, Graham Annesley, addressed the media earlier today, stating:
“We recognize that several decisions, particularly in high-stakes games involving the Panthers, did not meet the standards expected by the NRL, the clubs, or the fans. We are implementing structural changes and reviewing protocols to ensure greater accuracy and accountability moving forward.”
Panthers supporters have long voiced frustration over controversial calls, particularly in tight matches that had potential finals implications. The club has welcomed the NRL’s transparency but called for consistent improvements.
Referees boss Jared Maxwell also admitted the Bunker system will undergo a review, with new training and oversight measures set to be introduced before the finals series.
This announcement comes as a relief to many Panthers fans who have felt their team has been on the wrong end of several critical calls in recent seasons.
