Shockwaves in NRL: Former Penrith Panthers World Series Champ Designated for Assignment

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the rugby league community, a former Penrith Panthers star and World Series champion has been designated for assignment, prompting speculation about his future in the sport.

Nathan Cleary, a cornerstone of the Panthers’ historic 2021-2023 premiership run and a standout performer during the World Series of Rugby League, now finds himself without a club — at least for now.

Sources within the league confirmed on Saturday that Cleary was DFA’d after a surprising dip in form this season and ongoing injury concerns. His departure from the squad opens up salary cap space, but at a high cost — the loss of a generational talent and one of the most recognizable faces in the sport.

Fans took to social media in disbelief, with many expressing confusion and frustration at the timing of the decision.

“Surely there’s more to this,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). “You don’t just move on from a player like Cleary unless something big is brewing.”

Cleary’s achievements speak for themselves — three NRL Premierships, a Clive Churchill Medal, and his role in leading Australia to victory in the inaugural World Series made him a national icon.

Clubs across both the NRL and Super League are reportedly circling, with early whispers suggesting teams like the Sydney Roosters and even Wigan Warriors might be preparing offers.

As for Cleary, his camp has yet to release a formal statement, but sources say he remains focused and committed to returning to top form — wherever that may be.

This move marks a significant turning point not just for Cleary, but for the Panthers, who must now look ahead to rebuild without the man who helped define an era.

Stay tuned for updates as this developing story continues to unfold.
