In a dramatic development set to shake up the NRL landscape, the Parramatta Eels are reportedly preparing to part ways with star five-eighth Dylan Brown, less than two years into his record-breaking $13 million deal.
Brown, 25, signed a landmark 10-year contract with the Eels in late 2023, touted as a long-term playmaker to guide the club into premiership contention. However, ongoing off-field controversies, patchy form, and increasing pressure from fans and club legends have forced Parramatta’s hand.
Multiple sources close to the club have confirmed that internal discussions have taken place in recent weeks regarding Brown’s future, with one senior figure describing the situation as “untenable.”
A Fall From Grace
Once hailed as one of the most promising young halves in the competition, Brown’s form has dipped significantly in 2025. His on-field impact has been inconsistent, and off-field scrutiny intensified following previous misconduct allegations and a high-profile suspension in 2023.
Club legend Nathan Hindmarsh recently voiced his frustration in an interview, stating:
> “At some point, the club has to look at what’s best for the team. I think we’re at that point with Dylan.”
While Brown has reportedly remained committed to the club, tensions between his management and the Eels board have grown over concerns about his discipline, leadership, and value for money under the current deal.
What’s Next?
It’s understood the Eels are exploring options that include a mutual release, a potential trade, or offloading Brown to a rival club willing to absorb part of his salary. The Newcastle Knights have previously expressed interest, and could re-enter the conversation should Brown officially become available.
Parramatta has yet to issue a formal statement, but a spokesperson told NRL Newsroom:
> “All players are subject to ongoing performance review. Our priority is building a team that delivers for our fans.”
With the Eels currently sitting 13th on the ladder and finals hopes all but dashed, the club’s decision to cut ties with Brown could mark the start of a wider roster overhaul heading into the 2026 season.
