‘Furious’ star demands release after latest Eels snub

Bailey Simonsson is pushing for an early exit from Parramatta and is reportedly unhappy with his treatment at the club under coach Jason Ryles.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the talented outside back has requested his third release in the space of a month after again being overlooked for the Eels.

Despite an injury to Sean Russell in the centres, Simonsson remains on the outer for the round 23 clash against the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

While many figured that Simonsson – who was dropped after the side’s loss to the Raiders a few weeks ago – would slot back into the backline, that wasn’t the case.

Instead, rookie Jordan Samrani was initially named to replace Russell, but the indication now is that Dylan Brown will instead be called back into the side.

The Herald reports that Simonsson is “furious” with the fact Brown – who will join the Newcastle Knights next season and has been left out of the 17 in recent times – has been brought back into the side instead of him.

However, the 27-year-old had previously told Ryles that his preferred position was on the wing, which is why the coach did not elect to pick him at centre.

Simonsson has again demanded to be granted an early release from his deal, which is set to run through until the end of 2027 and the club are reportedly now considering it.

The former Canberra star has endured a wretched run with injuries over the past 12 months, having battled his way back from an ACL rupture to return in round six, only to break his foot and spending another two months on the sidelines.

He has scored 34 tries in 101 first grade games, as well as featuring in grand final losses for the Raiders in 2019 and Eels in 2022.
