Brisbane Broncos Drop Kotoni Staggs and Struggling Backline Players from First Team

In a decisive move to address underperforming players, the Brisbane Broncos have dropped Kotoni Staggs and several other struggling backline players from the first team, signaling a shift in their squad for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Despite being one of the club’s most promising talents in previous seasons, Staggs’ recent form has failed to meet the high standards set by both the coaching staff and the team’s passionate fanbase. While flashes of brilliance have been evident, inconsistency in key moments has led to his demotion, along with several other players in the backline who have struggled to find their rhythm.

Coach Kevin Walters Addresses the Changes

In a statement to the press, Broncos head coach Kevin Walters made it clear that the decision was made to foster greater consistency and accountability within the squad.

“We’ve had a number of players who, despite their potential, haven’t been able to deliver the level of performance we expect. Kotoni is a fantastic player, but we need more from him in terms of consistency across the full 80 minutes,” Walters said. “It’s a tough decision, but it’s necessary for the team’s growth and success.”

The changes come amid growing competition for spots within the Broncos’ backline, with emerging talents like Herbie Farnworth and versatile utility Tesi Niu vying for positions in the starting lineup. The coaching staff is clearly intent on building a lineup that can deliver results on a consistent basis as the team eyes a potential finals spot.

The Impact on Staggs and the Team’s Future

Though Staggs’ potential remains undeniable, his demotion from the first team raises questions about his future at the Broncos. While still regarded as a dynamic and capable center, the 24-year-old’s recent performances have been marred by moments of unforced error and a lack of impact in key games. His demotion comes at a time when the Broncos are looking to build a more cohesive and dependable squad.

“It’s disappointing, but I’ll continue to work hard and push myself to get back to my best,” Staggs said in response to the decision. “The team’s success comes first, and I’m committed to doing what’s needed to be back in the starting side.”

While Staggs’ future with the Broncos remains uncertain, many observers believe a change of scenery could reignite his career, should he find his form at another club.

Looking Ahead: The Road to Redemption

For the Broncos, the decision to make such significant changes to the first team reflects a broader strategy to refine the squad and build momentum heading into the critical second half of the season. With playoff aspirations still within reach, the club is determined to shake off any inconsistency and make a serious push for the finals.

“Now more than ever, it’s about team performance, not individual moments of brilliance,” Walters said. “The competition for spots is fierce, and we need players who can step up week in and week out. There’s no room for complacency.”

While the departure of key players from the starting side may frustrate some fans, it signals the Broncos’ commitment to their long-term goals. As for Kotoni Staggs, his journey remains ongoing — but whether he’ll regain his starting position at Brisbane or take his talents elsewhere will be one of the more intriguing storylines of the remainder of the 2025 season.
