Long and Interesting: Brisbane Broncos’ Oldest Veteran Signs Massive $899,000 Extension Through 2028, Cementing His Role as Cornerstone of Club’s Long-Term Future

In a powerful show of loyalty and long-term planning, the Brisbane Broncos have officially locked in Kotoni Staggs, the club’s oldest and most seasoned centre-winger, on a four-year contract extension valued at $899,000. The deal will see Staggs remain in Broncos colours through the end of the 2028 NRL season.

At 26, Staggs stands as a veteran presence in a squad increasingly built around youthful stars like Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam. Yet it’s the hard-hitting, emotionally charged style of Staggs that continues to define the Broncos’ edge both on the field and in the locker room.

Club insiders describe the extension as a “strategic cornerstone move” — not just for stability in the backline, but for maintaining a cultural backbone within a squad that has undergone significant reshuffling. With high-profile exits looming — including Selwyn Cobbo’s departure to the Dolphins in 2026 — Staggs’ commitment arrives at a pivotal moment for the Broncos’ future.

Broncos Head Coach Kevin Walters praised Staggs’ leadership and versatility:

> “Kotoni’s heart beats for this club. He’s matured into not just a strike weapon, but someone the younger boys genuinely look up to. Keeping him here long-term was never in doubt.”

Staggs, who debuted in 2018, has racked up over 130 NRL appearances and remains one of the most physically dominant backs in the competition. Despite battles with injury in past seasons, his recent form has seen a resurgence, highlighted by a career-best defensive record in 2025 and multiple match-winning tries.

The $899,000 deal reflects not just market value, but the trust placed in Staggs to lead the club into its next era. Fans have welcomed the news warmly, celebrating on social media with messages like “True Bronco through and through” and “Couldn’t imagine the team without him.”

With Staggs locked in, the Broncos now turn attention to re-signing several off-contract players before the 2026 season. But one thing is certain: in a league defined by constant change, Kotoni Staggs isn’t going anywhere.
