A former Parramatta Eels veteran has been handed a three-year suspension and issued a $20,000 fine following a serious breach of the NRL’s anti-doping policy.
The sanction stems from a positive drug test conducted in September 2020, which revealed the presence of two banned performance-enhancing substances—Ligandrol and Ibutamoren. The drugs are commonly associated with muscle growth and recovery, and are strictly prohibited under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations.
In addition to the suspension, which sidelined the player until 21 September 2023, the NRL confirmed that the veteran accepted full responsibility and waived the right to contest the charge.
The case sparked renewed discussion around drug use in the league, especially as it followed other high-profile incidents involving illicit substances. In separate cases, Corey Norman was fined $20,000 and suspended for eight weeks in 2016 after pleading guilty to MDMA possession, while Tony Williams and Nathan Davis received 12-game bans and financial penalties in 2018 for repeated cocaine violations.
The Eels have since distanced themselves from all players involved, reaffirming their commitment to clean sport and upholding the integrity of rugby league.
NRL officials emphasized the importance of education, testing, and personal accountability in preventing future incidents.
