In a move that has stunned the NRL world, Dylan Brown will leave the Parramatta Eels at the end of the 2025 season to join the Newcastle Knights on a record-breaking $13 million deal—the richest in the history of rugby league.
The 24-year-old Kiwi international has signed a 10-year contract with Newcastle, locking him in until 2035. The long-term security was reportedly a major factor in his decision to depart Parramatta, the club where he debuted in 2019.
> “It’s the 10 years of security,” Brown said. “It wasn’t about chasing money. This is about building something long-term.”
The deal represents a seismic shift in the NRL’s financial landscape, with the Knights investing in Brown as the future cornerstone of their spine alongside Kalyn Ponga. However, some league legends have questioned the move, warning that the pressure of such a massive contract could backfire.
Cooper Cronk and Matty Johns both voiced concerns over Brown’s readiness to take on the responsibilities of a dominant halfback, with Cronk saying, “He’s not proven yet as a controlling No. 7—and that’s what Newcastle needs.”
Parramatta fans were disappointed by the announcement, but the club has already begun planning for the post-Brown era. Reports suggest veteran utility Dylan Walker could be brought in as cover for 2026.
