In a stunning turn of events, Brisbane Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo has officially confirmed his departure from the club, signing a four-year, $3.8 million contract with the North Queensland Cowboys.
Speaking exclusively this morning, Cobbo said:
> “I’ve loved every moment at the Broncos, but it’s time for a new chapter. I’m proud to announce that I’ve signed with the Cowboys on a deal that secures my future and challenges me to grow even more as a player.”
The 22-year-old Origin winger had been at the center of swirling rumors for weeks, but the confirmation has left Broncos fans shocked, especially given the club’s earlier insistence that Cobbo was “not for sale.”
The deal, worth $950,000 per year, makes Cobbo one of the highest-paid outside backs in the NRL.
Cowboys coach Todd Payten welcomed the signing, calling Cobbo a “game-changer with his best footy still ahead of him.”
Meanwhile, the Broncos are now under pressure to retain Kotoni Staggs, whose contract also expires at the end of 2025. Club insiders say the Broncos simply couldn’t afford to keep both Cobbo and Staggs under the salary cap.
Fan Reaction
Social media has erupted, with many Broncos fans expressing disappointment and Cowboys supporters celebrating the high-profile acquisition.
> “This one hurts,” wrote one Broncos supporter on X (formerly Twitter). “But good on him for chasing what he deserves.”
Cobbo will finish the 2025 season with the Broncos before relocating to Townsville in November.
