Mathieu van der Poel signs new Alpecin-Deceuninck contract until 2028, says he is ‘hungry for more’ success

Mathieu van der Poel has extended his stay at Alpecin-Deceuninck by five more years after signing a new contract, which is set to keep him with the Belgian team until 2028.

Upon signing his new deal, the 29-year-old said he was “still hungry for more” and was delighted to be staying. “This extension is a logical choice for me,” the Dutchman said. “This is the perfect team to continue.”

“I have felt particularly comfortable in the structures of [team managers] Philip and Christoph Roodhooft from the beginning.

“I have grown together with the team and I still feel that we are making progress. And although we have already achieved many successes together, I am still hungry for more.

“Not unimportant in the fact is that Alpecin-Deceuninck is also multi-disciplinary. This is the perfect team to continue to combine road, mountain bike and cyclo-cross.”

x-time cyclo-cross world champion will end his career with the team.

On his new deal, team bosses Philip and Christoph Roodhooft added: “There is no doubt that we are delighted.

“We had a long-term plan with him from the beginning. The multidisciplinary vision was an important aspect of this. We quickly found each other in that as well.

“Just like Mathieu, we as a team are still hungry for more success, and the world champion plays an important role in that.”

Having joined Alpecin-Deceuninck in 2011 at the age of 13, Van der Poel will have represented the team for 18 years, should he see out the new agreement.

The deal suggests that the six-time cyclo-cross world champion will end his career with the team.
