After years of persistence and hard work, Gehamat Shibasaki will finally don the Queensland Maroons jersey in Game III of the State of Origin series — and he’s making it clear: this moment wasn’t given, it was earned.
“I’ve earned this jersey,” Shibasaki said confidently after the announcement. “I’ve worked hard for years, stayed patient, and never stopped believing this day would come.”
Queensland coach Billy Slater shocked many with the bold selection, but insiders say it was Shibasaki’s recent red-hot form for the Brisbane Broncos — including back-to-back two-try performances — that sealed the decision.
“Gehamat’s been knocking on the door with his performances,” Slater said. “He’s shown maturity, strength, and the hunger you want in an Origin player.”
Shibasaki will line up in the centres alongside Origin veteran Josh Papalii, forming a blend of youthful energy and experience as the Maroons aim to clinch the series in a high-stakes Sydney decider.
For Shibasaki, the debut is about more than rugby league. “I’m representing my family, my culture, and everyone who backed me through tough times. I won’t let them down.”
With his selection, Shibasaki becomes the latest symbol of Queensland’s proud tradition of resilience and redemption — and he’s ready to write his own chapter in Maroons history.
