Eels Robbed? Controversial Ref Call Sparks Outrage as Parramatta’s Epic Comeback Crushed in Dramatic Clash

Parramatta fans and NRL commentators are in uproar after a controversial touchline decision denied the Eels a game-tying try in their 34–20 loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons on Friday night.

The drama unfolded late in the second half, with the Eels charging back from a staggering 26–4 halftime deficit. Momentum was on their side when winger Josh Addo-Carr broke down the left sideline in what looked like a certain try. But the touch judge ruled him out of bounds—despite replays suggesting his foot may have stayed just millimetres inside the line.

The decision stopped a potential try that would have leveled the score at 26–26 and shifted the momentum completely to Parramatta. Instead, the Dragons regrouped, with Zac Lomax and Valentine Holmes sealing the win in the final minutes.

Fans and Experts Furious

Social media erupted almost instantly, with fans accusing officials of costing Parramatta the match.

> “That call was absolutely disgraceful. It changed the outcome of the entire game,” one fan wrote on X.
“If you’re not 100% sure he was out, you don’t blow the whistle. That’s footy 101,” said former Eels legend Nathan Hindmarsh on Fox League.

Club Response

Coach Jason Ryles was visibly frustrated post-game but held back from directly criticising the officiating.

> “We’ll leave that to the review process,” he said. “But I know our boys gave it everything and deserved better.”

Captain Mitchell Moses, returning from injury, called the decision “a gut punch,” especially after such a courageous second-half comeback.

> “We showed heart, but when you fight that hard and lose it like that… it’s tough to swallow.”

What’s Next?

The Eels are now teetering near the bottom half of the ladder and desperately need wins to stay in finals contention. But the psychological impact of Friday’s controversial finish could cast a long shadow.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the NRL’s refereeing department, with growing calls for greater accountability and the introduction of real-time sideline video reviews.
