Broncos Face Salary Cap Showdown: Can They Keep Both Cobbo and Staggs?

The Brisbane Broncos are staring down the barrel of a major salary cap conundrum as two of their brightest young stars — Selwyn Cobbo and Kotoni Staggs — approach the end of their current contracts.

Both players are integral to the Broncos’ long-term success, yet with over a dozen players coming off contract and limited cap space, the club faces a critical decision: Can they afford to retain both?

High-Value Targets

Cobbo, 22, has exploded onto the NRL scene with his electric speed, versatility, and game-changing ability. He’s being closely watched by the Sydney Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys, with speculation that both clubs are prepared to offer significantly more than Brisbane’s initial extension offer.

Meanwhile, Staggs — the powerful, strike-running centre — has also drawn interest across the league. The 26-year-old has publicly stated he sees himself as a “Bronco for life,” but negotiations have slowed as Brisbane carefully assesses its cap space.

Club Officials Weigh In

Speaking anonymously, one Broncos official said:

> “We’d love to keep both, but it’s not as simple as that. We’re in a tight spot cap-wise. Every dollar counts, and we have to be strategic.”

Cap Crunch Coming

The Broncos are also in advanced talks with veteran captain Adam Reynolds on a one-year extension, which, while crucial for stability, would further tighten the budget. Rising hooker Cory Paix is another re-signing priority as he cements himself as a starting 9 under coach Kevin Walters.

Third-party deals and the veteran allowance may provide some relief, but the question remains: Will Brisbane prioritise youth and future firepower, or experienced leadership and spine stability?

Fan Reactions Mixed

Broncos fans are split on social media, with many calling for the club to lock down Cobbo long-term, while others argue that Staggs’ consistency and experience in big games make him just as vital.

> “We can’t lose either of them,” wrote one fan. “Pay cut or not, find a way!”

What’s Next?

Expect both deals to heat up in the coming weeks, particularly as rival clubs prepare formal offers. Broncos management faces a defining offseason where every choice could shape the team’s premiership window.
