In a major shakeup ahead of the 2025-26 PWHL season, star forward Abby Roque has officially signed off on a trade deal that will send her from the New York Rangers to Montreal. The deal, reportedly valued at $80,000, marks one of the most high-profile player movements of the offseason so far.
Roque, known for her physical play and leadership on the ice, had a solid campaign with New York but was at the center of growing speculation as the team looks to restructure after missing the playoffs. Sources inside the organization say both parties agreed the move would offer a fresh start for Roque and allow New York to explore new roster options.
Montreal, on the other hand, is looking to bolster its offensive depth and sees Roque as a key addition to its top six. Her ability to drive play and bring grit to crucial matchups made her a top target in recent trade discussions.
“Abby brings exactly the kind of energy and experience we’re looking for as we build toward a championship-caliber team,” a Montreal front office source said. “We’re excited to welcome her to the city and get to work.”
Roque’s $80,000 contract is expected to remain intact for the remainder of the season, with performance bonuses potentially available depending on her impact with the new team.
The trade is expected to be finalized pending league approval.
Stay tuned for further updates as both teams prepare for the upcoming draft and training camp.
