BREAKING: Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks’ Star KL Iro Signs Record $871 Million Deal with Parramatta Eels for 2026 Season

Sydney, June 7, 2025 — In a jaw-dropping development that has sent shockwaves through the rugby league world, Cook Islands international and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks centre Kayal Iro—known widely as KL Iro—has reportedly signed a record-breaking $871 million contract with the Parramatta Eels, effective from the 2026 NRL season.

The deal, if confirmed, would be the largest player contract in rugby league history, eclipsing all previous salary agreements by a staggering margin and placing Iro among the highest-paid athletes in global sport.

Sources close to the negotiations suggest the Parramatta Eels are banking on Iro’s explosive speed, game-breaking ability, and growing star power to spearhead a premiership push and rejuvenate the club’s brand heading into the new decade.

Iro, who made his NRL debut with the Sharks in 2022 and quickly rose through the ranks with standout performances, has also been a standout on the international stage, representing the Cook Islands in multiple tournaments.

While club officials from both Parramatta and Cronulla have yet to issue formal statements, social media is ablaze with reactions ranging from shock to skepticism, with fans and analysts alike questioning the size and structure of the deal.

What This Means:

Iro would become the highest-paid NRL player ever, eclipsing even marquee signings in the sport’s modern era.

The Eels are signaling massive intent to rebuild their squad around a generational talent.

Salary cap implications could prompt a league-wide review or restructuring.

Stay tuned as more details emerge surrounding this historic contract and what it means for the future of the NRL.
