Laurie Daley Reveals Near Miss for Payne Haas and Stephen Crichton in Origin Opener

In a surprising revelation, rugby league legend Laurie Daley has opened up about the tense moments leading up to the highly anticipated State of Origin opener, disclosing that both Payne Haas and Stephen Crichton were on the brink of missing out on selection.

Daley, who is widely respected for his insight into the game, shared that the two star players were facing fitness and injury concerns just days before the crucial match. According to Daley, Haas, the powerful forward for the Brisbane Broncos, was struggling with a niggling injury that had left his availability uncertain. Similarly, Crichton, the dynamic centre for the Penrith Panthers, was reportedly in a race against time to recover from a minor setback.

“It was touch and go for both of them,” Daley said in an exclusive interview. “Payne had some issues with his knee, and Stephen was dealing with a shoulder concern. They were both in doubt, but the medical staff worked overtime to get them right.”

Despite the uncertainty, both players were ultimately cleared to take the field, and their performances in the Origin opener would prove pivotal. Haas delivered a dominant display in the middle of the field, while Crichton’s presence in the backline was crucial in both attack and defense.

Daley praised the resilience and determination of both players, emphasizing the critical role they played in securing a hard-fought victory for New South Wales. “It’s a testament to their professionalism and the work of the medical team,” he said. “Both players showed they’re willing to do whatever it takes for the team.”

The near-miss only adds to the drama surrounding one of rugby league’s biggest annual events, with fans and experts alike marveling at the level of commitment required to represent the state in such a high-stakes competition.

With the victory in the bag, all eyes are now on the upcoming games in the series, and many are eager to see if Haas and Crichton can maintain their momentum throughout the rest of the series.
