Birmingham City dealt blow on the injury front ahead of Barnsley clash

Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has said Emil Hansson has picked up a ‘knock’ in training.

Birmingham City’s winger missed their trip to Bristol Rovers last time out. BCFC won 2-1 at the Memorial Ground after goals by atttacking pair Jay Stansfield and Keshi Anderson as they took another step towards the title.

Hansson, 26, will now also sit out of their home match against Barnsley at St Andrew’s this weekend. He may also be ruled out for their Vertu Trophy cup final against Peterborough United next Sunday at Wembley.

Davies has shared this update on his condition, as per a report by BirminghamLive: “Frustratingly for Emil and us, he picked up a bit of a knock in training the day before the game, so that’s disappointing. It’s not a season-ender, it will be a few weeks maximum. We’ll have to see how he goes in the next few days.”

Who plays at Elland Road?

Not having Hansson available is a blow for Birmingham City. He will be disappointed if he can’t play against Peterborough United in the final.

He has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season and has chipped in with two goals and two assists.

The Blues landed him last year to add more competition and depth to their attacking department.

He was their fourth signing last summer after their relegation from the Championship and they gave him a three-year deal running until June 2027.

Hansson said at the time, as per BBC Sport: “I had a really good talk with Chris Davies and (technical director) Craig Gardner. They told me about the plans this club has, especially for what we want to achieve next season – it was something I could not say no to.”

The former Sweden youth international played 78 matches for his previous club Heracles in Holland and found the net on 21 occasions in 78 outings.

Hansson has also had spells in the past at Kalmar, Brann, Feyenoord, RKC Waalwijk, Hannover and Fortuna Sittard.

What now for Birmingham City?

As Davies alluded to, Hansson’s season may not be over just yet and they will need to assess him over the coming days and weeks to see how he is.

In the meantime, Birmingham City are closing in on the title. Their upcoming opponents Barnsley are without a permanent manager after sacking Darrell Clarke and have Conor Hourihane in interim charge.
